Know ahead of time if your wedding date falls on the same day as a trade conference, charity walk or other local event that could affect traffic and hotel room availability. Heres a handy list of potentially problematic wedding dates coming up in the calendar.

Smart casual for women encompasses anything from a neatly tailored blazer and a button-down shirt, to a crisp sundress, as does a pair of smart trousers or a lovely skirt. A classic pair of dress pants or a little black dress, too, would suffice nicely. Just be sure to add a bit of flair!

Digital technology changes so quickly. I received my wedding photos on a CD only five years ago, and now most computers don’t even come with disc drives! Prints will never be obsolete technology. 20 years from now, you’ll be able to sit down with your family and show them your wedding album. You can’t guarantee the same for digital files.

Black tie is the second most formal dress code and is typically reserved for evening weddings. Despite what its title may suggest, black tie does not mean you must wear black, although traditionally men should wear a black tuxedo and a bow tie. Black tie appropriate attire for women can be an evening gown of any colour.

Of course, I think digital files are also really important at this point in time. They’re wonderful for sharing with friends and family all over the world instantly. I always include digital files while the album is optional, so you can use those files to make as many of your own prints as you like anyway. But I love albums. There’s nothing like seeing your beautiful photos printed out in a way that lets you actually physically hold them.

You can have the most gorgeous wedding invitations ever, but when it comes down to it, they need to be informative. They should spell out all essential wedding info—whos getting married, whos hosting and where and when the ceremony will take place. (Everything else should go on your wedding website.) If your wedding style is more unique or modern, feel free to express that by breaking a few rules. Your wedding invitation is the first impression guests will have of your wedding, so it should sound like you.

If you’re thinking about what shoes go with your smart casual outfit, male or female, you should definitely ditch the runners! For men, think loafers and brogues and boat shoes – and think shoe polish. Worn-out shoes are, well, a little too casual.

A photo album is more of a personal choice rather than a ‘must have’ these days. All the weddings I have photographed have wanted digital delivery so that they can print the photos at a later stage or make their own book/album if they ever want it. We live in a world now where 99% of our photos are on our phone and computers rather than in albums or frames. From a photographers view, it’s easier to not produce an album as the process can be very time consuming. It can also be frustrating for the couple, having to wait for the album to be finished.

Get a grip on the approximate number of guests you will invite before settling on a venue. This will ensure theres ample space for your crew. As a rule of thumb, allow for 25 to 30 square feet per guest. That may seem like a lot, but its really not if you count the space you will need for the tables, bustling waiters, the band and a dance floor.

A wedding album really is an investment. Its not really for you in the ‘now’, its for you (and your family) in the future. It doesn’t have to be ultra fancy, ultra expensive or even made with your photographer (although as artists we do like to be involved in the process). But I think you will find we all agree that your photographs should be printed, and definitely reside within an album. In ten years’ time, you’ll be so glad you did. And in 70 years’ time, your children and your grandchildren will be glad you did too.
